Capralog is a goat herd record-keeping app available at capralog.com. This page explains what we collect, how we use it and who we share it with. We try to collect only what the app needs to work.
What we collect
- Account details: your name, your email address and your password. Passwords are stored in a scrambled (hashed) form, so we cannot read them.
- Herd records you enter: goats, pedigrees, weights, milk, health, heat, breeding, kidding, appraisal and show records, 4-H project records (member names, clubs, expenses, income, feed, activities and project stories), and any notes you add.
- Reminder settings: if you turn on any reminders (below), the choices you make for them: how often, what hour, your time zone, and for notifications the address your device gives us to reach it.
- Your sharing choice: whether you have opted in to the shared goat database (see below).
- Usage counts: how many photo scans you have used, and when your account was created.
- Messages you send us: feedback, ideas and bug reports, together with the page you sent them from.
- Billing details: if you subscribe to Pro, Stripe collects your card details. We never see or store your card number. We keep a Stripe customer and subscription reference and the subscription status and renewal date.
- Technical data: your IP address is used briefly to limit repeated sign-in and sign-up attempts, and our hosting provider keeps standard server logs.
How we use it
- To run your account and keep your herd records available on your devices.
- To send emails about your account: a confirmation message when you sign up and password reset links when you ask for one.
- To take payment for Pro and manage your subscription.
- To read registration papers when you choose to scan them.
- To keep the service secure, prevent abuse, and understand and answer feedback.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not show advertising.
Who we share it with
We use a few service providers to run Capralog. They only receive what they need to do their job:
- Hostinger hosts the website and database and the mailbox we send email from.
- Stripe processes payments for Pro subscriptions.
- Anthropic reads text from photos when you use the photo scan feature (see below).
We may also share information if the law requires it, or to protect the service and its users from fraud or abuse.
Reminders (your choice)
Capralog can remind you about what is due. All three are optional and off until you turn them on in the Data page. They use your own herd records to say what needs doing.
- Email summary: a daily or weekly email listing the goats that need attention. It goes to your account email at the hour you choose, and every email has an unsubscribe link.
- Calendar link: a private web address you add to your calendar app. Anyone who has the link can see your due dates (goat tags or names and what is due), so keep it to yourself. You can reset it or turn it off at any time, and the old address stops working immediately.
- Phone and computer notifications: a short daily alert. To send it, your browser gives us an address for your device and encryption keys, and the message travels through your device maker's notification service (such as Apple, Google or Mozilla). It contains only goat tags or names and short reasons. You can turn it off on each device.
Shared goat database (your choice)
Capralog has a shared goat database that helps people fill in pedigrees. When you create an account there is a box asking if you want to take part. It is ticked by default, so untick it if you would rather not share. Accounts created before this choice existed are not sharing. You can switch sharing on or off at any time on the Data page.
- What is shared if you take part: only facts about the animals: registration number, name, breed, sex, birth date, color, titles, registry, and the registration numbers or names of the sire and dam.
- What is never shared: your name, email, herd, tags, notes, health, milk, appraisal or show records, breeder or tattoo details, and your photos.
- Who can see it: other signed-in Capralog users can search the database and use it to fill in a goat and its ancestors, whether or not they contribute. It is not public on the internet.
- Anonymous: we do not store which account contributed an entry, so entries are not linked to you.
- Turning it off: switch it off at any time and nothing more is shared. Facts already added stay in the database because they describe animals, not you. If you want an entry removed, email us at noreply@capralog.com or use the Feedback page inside the app.
- Accuracy: entries come from users and can contain mistakes. They are not official registry records.
Photo scans
When you scan registration papers, the photo is sent to Anthropic's API so the text on it can be read. We do not keep the photo after the result is returned. The text it finds (the animal's name, registration number, pedigree and similar details) is shown to you to check, and is saved to your herd only if you confirm it. We ask the reader to ignore owner names and addresses printed on certificates. Please do not scan documents that contain information you do not want processed in this way.
Cookies and storage on your device
Capralog uses one essential cookie to keep you signed in. It is not used for tracking or advertising. The app also keeps a copy of your herd in your browser's storage so it keeps working without a signal. We do not use analytics or advertising trackers.
How long we keep your data
We keep your account and herd records until you delete your account. Deleting your account (Data page, then Delete my account) permanently removes your profile and every record in it and cancels any Pro subscription. Copies may remain in our hosting provider's backups for a limited time, and Stripe keeps payment records as the law requires.
Your choices
- Download your data at any time from the Data page (backup file or goat list).
- Correct your information by editing it in the app, or ask us to.
- Delete your account from the Data page.
- Ask us a question about your information: email us at noreply@capralog.com or use the Feedback page inside the app.
Security
Connections to Capralog are encrypted, passwords are hashed, and each account can only reach its own records. No online service can promise perfect security, so please choose a strong password and keep it private.
Children
Capralog is meant for adults. It is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their information.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will update the date at the top. If a change is significant we will tell you in the app or by email.
